Common Name: Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat Scientific Name: Lasiorhinus krefftii Kingdom:Animalia Phylum:Chordata Class:Mammalia Order:Diprotodontia Genus:Lasiorhinus Species: L. krefftii
The northern hairy-nosed wombat is a herbivore because it does not eat any meat. Their diet consists of grass, fungi mushroom, moss, and leaves. They eat different varieties, but their favorite would be the tussock grass! Food pyramid, food chain, and food web is shown below:
Their population is only around 200. They can be found in Queensland, Australia.
Commensalism: Wombats dig holes as burrows, and once the wombat decides the leave the burrow to move locations, rabbits eventually find the abandoned hole and use it as their own home/shelter.
Parasitism: Mites use wombats skin and fur as shelter from the environment, but it injures the wombat.
Mutualism: Wombats breathe out carbon for the spear grass, in which that plant can then can use to thrive and prosper. Due to this, the plant is healthy, in which the wombat can then eat the spear grass.
Density Independant #1: Weather changes can harm population of wombats due to droughts which can deprieve the wombats of water, thus leading to dehydration among the wombats. Density Independant #2: Rain is needed for breeding (yet they live in Australia). Rain makes it easier for the younger wombats to live and to coax them out of their mothers pouch. Density Independant #3: Cattle and sheep will eat grass around their burrows, which is a source of food for wombats. Since wombats do not venture far from their burrows, this can cause starvation.
Density Dependant #1: Humans hunt wombats. Density Dependant #2: Competition over food because of overgazing. Density Dependant #3: Liver disease sometimes spread which end up with wombats having a hard time walking. Also, fox can spread diseases to wombats (mange).
